29th Independence Commemoration Message

RESTORING ZIMBABWE’S VIBRANCY

AS Zimbabwe celebrates its 29th anniversary of independence it does so with immense pride of consolidating its peace and cordial relations across the national political divide. We have created a common vision to lead our country to future economic prosperity and stability. Going into our third decade, this agenda of consolidating our recent political and economic gains remains our focus.

The Global Political Agreement signed in

September 2008 by the three major parties, Zanu PF led by President Robert Mugabe, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and the other MDC formation led by Prof. Arthur Mutambara, the Deputy Prime Minister, has set a very firm foundation upon which to rebuild and strengthen our politics and the economy. With less than 100 days of the formation of the inclusive government, major milestones have been achieved.

The inclusive government has come up with the Short Term Economic Recovery document that will serve as a foundation to a market economy going into the future. On the basis of this document, the inclusive government has been able to arrange an economic recovery package worth about US$ 8, 2 billion through the regional block, the Southern African Development Community. The inclusive government has also put in motion a multiparty process to review the constitution of Zimbabwe to be in line with the new political dispensation brought about by the Global Political Agreement.

Engagement with a section of the international community that had strained relations with Zimbabwe has been enhanced. Relations with international financial institutions are being restored after the inclusive government instituted economic reforms.

These economic reforms are focused on facilitating the private sector to take the leading role as an engine of economic growth. Zimbabwean entrepreneurs will take the lead in attracting investors in joint investments. The land reform programme is going to be one of the key economic vehicles that will lead economic integration of Zimbabweans into the mainstream economy. This programme presents huge investment opportunities for foreigners in agriculture, in strategic partnership with Zimbabweans.

These policy initiatives are intended to tap the ingenuity of the Zimbabwean entrepreneur while at the same time providing business opportunities to the investing community.

These are some of the strategic achievements obtained so far and have been facilitated by the political will present in the top leadership of the country. As has been expressed in various fora and more recently so at the Victoria Falls Strategic Retreat, both President Mugabe and Prime Minister Tsvangirai have expressed unwavering commitment to the initiatives built around the Global Political Agreement.

I urge all to take advantage of this opportunity and to be part of the transformatory process leading to a future and VIBRANT Zimbabwe!
